Concrete Truths Part 1: Why Concrete Still Rules the Industry

May 05, 2025

Let’s get something straight right out of the gate—concrete isn’t going anywhere.

I’ve been working this trade for over three decades. I’ve poured thousands of slabs, built foundations for everything from modest homes to multi-million dollar estates, and worked on projects for Disneyland, Universal Studios, and high-end architects. Through all the change I’ve seen in construction—new materials, new tech, new tools—concrete has always been the backbone. And for good reason.

Concrete Is Still King

Why do we keep going back to concrete?

Because it flat-out works. It's durable, reliable, and if you know what you’re doing, it looks damn good too. It’s used in nearly every type of construction—driveways, patios, foundations, retaining walls, countertops, pool decks. The list goes on. Whether you're in residential, commercial, or decorative work, concrete delivers results that last.

But here’s the truth that doesn’t get talked about enough: there’s a serious shortage of skilled concrete professionals. The guys who show up, do clean work, communicate well, and run a tight job site? They’re in demand. Big time.

Now’s the Time

If you're already in the trade or thinking about getting into it, now’s your shot. Seriously. You don’t need a college degree. You don’t need a fleet of trucks. You just need the willingness to learn, work hard, and treat this like a business, not just a job.

If you can:

✔ Show up when you say you will
✔ Deliver clean, professional work
✔ Communicate clearly with clients and contractors
✔ Price your work in a way that makes profit—not pennies

...then you’re already ahead of half the guys out there.

But if you take the next step—learn to build systems, train and lead a crew, invest in tools that save you time, and run your numbers like a business owner? That’s when things change. That’s when you start building real freedom.

It’s Not Just Mud and Muscle Anymore

When I started, it was all about who could wheel the most mud and finish a slab the fastest. Those skills still matter—don’t get me wrong—but today, the guys who thrive are the ones who work smarter.

From estimating apps to project management software, drone surveys to digital marketing—the trade is evolving. And those who learn how to ride the wave instead of fighting it? They’re getting better results, with less stress and more money.

The Opportunity Is Real

We’ve got a labor gap. Fewer young people are getting into trades, and that’s left a wide-open lane for those of us willing to take it seriously. If you’re dependable, you care about your craft, and you’re willing to learn the business side of things, you’ve got a shot at building something that lasts—not just a job, but a legacy.

Coming Up Next…

In Part 2 of this series, we’ll dive deeper into how the game is changing—and how modern concrete pros are using technology, strategy, and better systems to get ahead.

Until then, stay sharp, keep learning, and keep pouring with purpose.

Let’s build something that lasts.
